Time to sort my tyres out. I have Mk1 HGT alloys (15") on my Marea currently wearing 195/55 R15 84V shoes. I've heard Oz mention that 205's are much better and I seem to recall someone saying they may be cheaper too.

Advice needed soon as I need to get the car booked in before I go away on business and then hospital.

Cheers :)

Def go for 205/50/15s mate. Much better stability and grip. I use the Dunlop SP Sport 01s and can't fault them. Great in wet, dry and snow and less road noise too.

mytyres do them at very reasonable rates but you have to take the car to a dealer to be fitted. etyres are next best on price if you want mobile fitting.

Cheers Oz. I just got a quote on some tyres and it looks like I'll stick with 195's as money is very tight. The guy I just spoke to said they had an offer on Hankook tyres and that they were better than Avon's. Any ideas ?

No idea fella. I understand about the money side but tyres are important mate. Trust me when I say the difference is dramatic. So much more confidence on the rear end (oo-errr).

How much they quoting you for the 195s? Also, I think Kwik-Fit(up) have a 4 for 3 offer on Michelin at the moment.

They're quoting me £50.50 + VAT per tyre. They do cheaper stuff too. He also said that I wouldn't notice a major difference between the 205/50 and 195/55, especially for the price difference. I fully appreciate the importance of tyres but money is a BIG factor. I need to get as good as I can for as little as I can :)

Hankook are ok, i have tem on me van, but for a few extra quid i would always get a known brand, and trust me you can tell a difference between two brands, but its better to be legal than get 3 points per tyre :) im assuming your shoes are down to the legal limit?

I'm still legal but probably not for much longer given the mileage I'm doing at the moment !

Rob, if you're in Lowestoft then Kirkley run wheels and tyres are very good, I'm getting a pair of avon 195 x 60 x 15s today for £40 fitted, hankook were £37 per corner or thereabouts, maybe worth a phone call?

They have a tyre place in Gt Yarmouth too.

*edit - typo*

Don't do Hankcrap they are appalling tyres.
Kwifit are the people who pursuaded me that they
were good for my Evo. Either they had no idea of what a good tyre should handle like or were total sharks - buy anything except these. Try and keep to the brand names tyres as after all tyres are pretty important. Best cheaper tyres -Toyo Proxes T1Rs. Hope this helps.

i am now running on a full set of TOYO proxies 205/50/15 and it sticks better than any other tyres if had on it..............including bridestone sports tyres :)

i still say pirelli p-zero nero's. but they wear out quick and arent that cheap

Have you tried Federal SS595's.My mate has them on his focus st and says there awesome. you can get 17's on ebay for about 40 a tyre.

Well, I just sorted my rubber out !

I eventually plumped for 4 x GT Champiro 55's from Kwik Fit. They're a mid range tyre, but most importantly, they were a good price. All 4 tyres, plus fitting, valves, balancing, disposal & VAT came to £214 ! That's £53.50 per shoe, which I think is pretty good, especially as they were going to cost nearer £300, but I got £15 per tyre off via the Kwik Fit online quote and a further 10% off because I have my insurance with Kwik Fit.

From the research I've done, these seem to be a well respected make with loads of favourable reviews, most of which state that these are comparable and sometimes better than the more well known brands.

After I caught a look at the centre of my old near side front, I can count myself VERY lucky !!
