If a tyre has been looked after and has 5mm tread, would it be considered old at 4years? Just had a guy offer 3rd of what im after cause of being 4years?

Rubber does deteriorate (sp?) over the years.
Check for cracks (even the smallest), as they have been exposed to the elements.

As above, I've got a 40yr old tractor with original tyres on, still in tact. Plus look at how many 4yr old cars there are with low millage, their tyres don't need changing 
....

They do age and deteriorate, but 4 years with low miles aint so bad. Just serviced my grans ford ka which has done 16k and is still on all 4 original tyres. The point to note tho is that its a 53 plate!
