Hi

I hope someone might help?
I have a Morris Minor with a 2 litre Fiat twin cam (with Weber carb).
It starts fine every time (from cold), then runs well for a mile or 3, the engine then just dies?
It tries to start but if it does run, if started - will die within a few seconds.
Anyone have any idea?
Seems like it might be fuel related - but being intermittent it's very had to sort.

I think you have a foreign object like a piece of cotton in your fuel tank that is blocking the gauze. it will take approx 1-3 miles for the object to get sucked up. Then when you stop, it falls away. As soon as you start again, its sucked up and blocks. Take the tank sender unit out and check the gauze. Also when stopped, release the fuel cap, and see if the tank goes whoosh. Might not be venting. Then try to start it.
My other suggestion is, are you running mechanical or electric fuel pump? If electric, it could be heating up and stopping because of poor connections or the fuel filter is full of crud.
Usual way to find if its your ignition circuitis, if it stops suddenly, do the dash lights come on? if they do its ignition, if they dont, its fuel.
To check its fuel, when it stops, pour a few drops of petrol in the carb, and see if it will run, then you know its fuel related.

Btw, is this the moggy at Tattan Park Classic Car Show last year??

Thanks for the reply - I will try looking to see if there is something in the tank (good idea).
It has a mechanical fuel pump...
...the tank vent is fine - I did try that (been caught that way before!).
As to Tatton Park - honestly have no idea, I have recently bought the car - it is a 'work in progress' [tatty but all there] - if I can get it to run, could be a 'hot' classic?
So nice to receive a constructive reply.
I will be trying in the meantime.....

Right mechanical pump can be the pump arm that runs the pump, could be worn, or the pump itself is full of crud. Some fitted to that engine were sealed, some you could strip. You may need a new pump. Also is there a fuel filter inline? If not, there should be. Also check the float. It maybe leaking and filling with petrol. if the engine stops, take the top off the carb and see if the float chamber is dry. Run the starter and see if the fuel feed pipe is pumping fuel. I would take the carb off anyways, and give it a serious clean out.

If Sumplugs suggestions do not help Moogy, what i have seen is a brand new fuel pump that does not pump. The 2 lt and 1756 engine use what looks very similar, but the angle of the arm is not the same. Will cause your symptoms.
Btw you don't have to remove the top of the carb to check fuel level, just push the throttle lever down and see if the accelerator pump shoots gas into the carb. Also check to see if the acc pump is not leaking and causing your problem. good luck .Have any pictures of that morris minor with t/c fiat? Never seen this before on this side of the lily pond.

Its a good idea to remove the carb top, then you can see if the float is porous and the needle valve works ok.
