Technical Turn off "change engine oil" alert

Hello everyone,

I know it was mentioned in other threads, but I tried a lot of times to press acceleration pedal 3x within 10 sec to get rid of the alert. Nothing happens, maybe I do something wrong or...
Any ideas please.

hi,

use a software program, to clear the various things in the ECU that trigger the warning message

What engine does your car have?
If it's a diesel it may be that the oil change counter, which is separate from the service light, has not been reset properly. You need to get Fiat specific software diagnostics run on the car to see what is going on. Either main dealer, Fiat specialist or DIY with Multiecuscan and an ELM 327 USB interface.

Hi, it's a 1.6 Diesel and this is a warning message to "Change engine oil", then the red oil pressure icon blinks all the time, after 5-10 min. the warning message appears again. I read that I can reset the counter by turn key but not start engine, press acceleration pedal 3 time then turn key off. Lots of times I tried but this message comes up after each start.
If I went to a dealer would they charge me just to remove this message? What if I leave it there, will it cause anything?

Hi,
Yes a dealer will charge to clear the light and most will (quite rightly IMHO) also insist on doing an oil change first. The engine ECU (computer) thinks that the oil has be degraded by the number of DPF regenerations. If you ignore the light the ECU will stop regenerating the DPF, the DPF will cog up and you will face an even bigger bill.
When was the oil last changed and who did it? If it was recently it's likely they did not reset the oil degredation counter properly.

MOT comes soon so I hope before MOT on service they reset it, but that's 1.5 month from now. What do you suggest?

Hi,
Technically it's National tyres responsibility, but as they did not do it right first time it's unlikely they have the capability. You could ask them to pay for a Fiat garage to do the reset but I doubt they would go for it. There are two things that need resetting on a diesel with DPF, the service counter and the oil degradation counter. The latter needs Fiat specific software so either main dealer or Fiat / Alfa Romeo specialist. There is a DIY solution, a laptop, ELM 327 interface and software called Multiecuscan. The cost of interface and software is similar to what a main charges for a reset, but is not worth it if you do not do your own maintenance. If you are near Cambridge I could do it for you.
An MOT tester won't (should not anyway)do the emissions test with this light on and if you keep driving you may damage the DPF.

IF they are local to you..take it back,
it's a 15 / 20 minute job..

otherwise find a FIAT / Alfa specialist.. ,
where are you / the car based.

I'm intrigued by the pedal pressing..
does that actually work - on ANY DPF equipped car..??

I was on the phone with a fiat dealer and told, they don't reset memory only if they do the oil change. Also told that this light is only a information so should not cause any damage. I hope he was right and now wait for service before MOT to remove this message. Thanks all your replies and help

Well I'm just a Fiat owner*, but dispite what the dealer says, the 500 DPF supplement (see downloads) says
"Exhausted engine oil should be
replaced as soon as possible after
the warning light comes on, never more than
500 km after the warning light first comes
on. Failure to change the oil within the first
500 km may result in severe damage to the
engine and will result in forfeiture of the
warranty. Remember that when the warning
light flashes, it does not mean that the level
of engine oil is low, so if the light flashes you
must not top up"
So I think you should get it reset properly. The problem is that the ECU stops regenerating the DPF so it gets blocked.

started to worried what you wrote Robert, so called back national about the ecu reset, and they said can do it, so now I just need to go back and they reset the counter. I really hope it will be as easy as it sounds. Keep you posted what happened.

Hi,
just make sure they reset the oil degradation counter in the engine ECU not just the service interval. These are separate and the degradation counter is unique to DPF equipped vehicles. Even some Fiat garages have been known to miss it.

I tried my luck yesterday but national hasn't got 500L in their system so no luck at all. Today I am heading to a dealer with other issue but they rejected to reset it in the first place (unless they change oil) so I have no idea where to go with this. Every day I am travelling 40-50mi and hope nothing bad will happen.

Try showing the Fiat garage the receipt from National, it might help. Clearly National did work on your car which they are not equipped to do so it's their responsibility. What did they say? Legally they should put it right, possibly by paying for a Fiat garage to do the reset or giving you a full refund plus compensation for your time and trouble. You could then go to a Fiat dealer or specialist to get an oil change done properly.
Where are you located?
I suggest you read the manual (and DPF supplement) on the warning light. I'm pretty sure it stops DPF regeneration and can thus cause damage. If the Fiat garage still say it won't cause a problem, ask them to put it writing that it won't damage the engine or DPF.
