Hi all just wanted to know if anybody can tell me how much I'd be looking at for a set of coupe 20vt cams & turbocharger? Would it be better to plumb straight for a hybrid unit? please bear in mind I don't want to run silly PSI! cheers! (y)
 
For the turbo, you'd be looking at about £100-150 for a second-hand turbo. For a new one from Fiat, about £650 I think. You can then have it reconditioned, for about £300, or hybrided for a bit more. Or you can just buy a meaty roller-bearing turbo (around £1200 I think).
Cams - I'm not sure how much you're looking at for standard, but I think you'd probably want Columbo & Bariani cams, which Torque Italia can supply.

Cheers chaps. Just one more thing what should I look for if pruchasing a second hand turbo? Is it a case you pay your money & take a chance?
 
That £3000 should have been £300! Original post now edited.
If you're buying a second hand one, you want one with as little play as possible in the shaft. You can test this by hand, trying to move the shaft in and out. Lots of play means worn seals, however if you're having it reconditioned, this is less of a problem. unless they're so badly worn that the housing is scored, or something like that.
Did you know I have a turbo in a box in my kitchen?

Basically, any axial movement (press a thumb against the exhaust turbine and compressor wheel, see if you can feel any movement at all along the shaft) and it's needing a refurb. A little radial movement (move compressor wheel or turbine up and down at right angles to the shaft) is expected, as it runs in a cushion of oil. If there's too much radial movement you may see wear on the housings if it's been catching.

If you're debating between getting a standard recon, and a hybrid - I'd recommend the hybrid - it pulls like Paris Hilton at a free bar! I'd love to see what the rollerbearing goes like.

Is that the one with the 360o thrust bearing? Never understood what difference this made from the usual 270o bearing? :confused:
 
Dunno the specifics mate - it's just 90 degrees of extra thrust bearing to me! There are various options, like compressor wheel sizes, but I just got what was recommended off a FCCUK group buy.

Just a couple more questions! :eek: Will I need the intercooler from the coupe or can I use a Saab/Volvo one? Is a chargecooler better than an intercooler? Thanks! (y)
 
I reckon an intercooler would be a good idea, as they provide 2 benefits - lowering intake temps to prevent melting a piston, and making the intake air more dense to provide more power. It wouldn't have to be the intercooler off the Coupe though.
With a chargecooler, this is usually used in conjunction with an intercooler I believe. It does more of the same, but I'd imagine that the intercooler is safer, as when you are going faster, and have higher charge temps, you get more cooling from an intercooler. With a chargecooler, you could get a leak, and the rate of cooling isn't proportional to the speed you go at.
What you could do is start off with neither, and with boost at a low level, then monitor your boost temps by using a digital temp gauge with remote sensor from Maplins or similar.

Cheers H I think I'll get an intercooler straight away though just to be on the safe side. I thought the chargecooler sat behind the airbox so that as the air went through the airbox & came out the other side so it's cooled at that point they're expensive though! (n) Would you recommend a coupe intercooler though as it'll be matched to the turbo & engine?
 
The chargecooler goes between the intercooler and the engine intake, so after the turbo and intercooler.
The make of intercooler wouldn't matter too much. The standard Coupe intercooler isn't particularly effective, since it's small and not well positioned. Lots of other intercoolers would be better....
