Technical Turbo Owners Thread...

Not suprised you are having probs! on my NA cinq I had clearance issues with the supersprint manifold. With the sandwich plate on there was no way I could use the Std filter.

I am using a Champion one for a Renault 5 1.4gt which was the shortest one with a M20 thread that Halfords did! it is 55mm long and looks as norrow as your Fram one but without the flated bits. might save you a wasted trip tomorow.

Have you thought of a remote filter head? just think of trying to get the filter off when your oil (and Turbo) are nice and hot. The other option is that the none thermostatic sandwich plate could be thinner, I don't think the Turbo will have a problem getting the oil temp hot enough to avoid sludging

PS the champion filter cosr over a tenner!

same here :p

my wide and short one is a R5 GT one, maybe its a fram thing where they have made it wider to compensate, as i know aaron said R5 GTT filter to me too and he got it on no probs :( although halfords dont stock the R5 GTT filter, im going to just take my current filters to halfords and factors and get smallest filter i can find :p

the one fitted to mine is a 5GTT filter
custard wonders if he should go for a remote filter on his when fitting :chin:

Never played with turbos but isn't there a simple take off which will allow you to run a remote filter and an oil cooler?

Ah, this is what custard is talking about. On t'other hand, you should run an oil cooler and a thermostat or the oil will be too cold until you've caned the ******** (and the life) out of it. I think there are remote stats available, too.

I have used both a R5GTT filter and I now use a Clio Williams (i think HOF277 in halfords, listed for 2L Clio 95-98 IIRC) filter on mine.

I managed to get mine on and off with the filter scraping off one of the turbo/exhaust studs, so I removed the sandwhich plate retaining bolt and sawed about 3mm off it reshaped the end to make sure thread correct and I can now get the oil filters if off and on with space to spare.

The reason I used a R5GTT filter is in general filters from turbo cars have a higher filtration rate due to turbos being a much higher stressed item with smaller tolerances than a n/a engine. i now use the Clio Williams filter as again it has good filtration qualities.

Aaron.

result! cut down, and tidied thread and oil filter screw on no worries, run out all excited to try it, and it wont screw on... weird... try it with the other bolt thingy to see if it goes on there ok... nope, its threaded  time to cut down my other one (if my hacksaw blade can take anymore  )
