as my present to myself i have bought an entry level DSLR camera, it still looks to be mostly a point and click affair but does have manual controls.

http://www.fujifilm.co.uk/consumer/digital/digital-cameras/d-slr-long-zoom/finepix-s5700/View

will have to wait for it to arrive to see how it really is but it cant be worse than my Sony 2.0MP camera i have been using.

i paid £114.98 for the camera and a 2gb mem card which i think is a good deal, i paid £130 for my sony a few years back.

anyone using this camera? i've read good reviews but wondered if anyone had sample pictures from it?

Thanks,
Ry

i had the s5600, it was a very good bridge camera for the money - so the new model must be pretty good too.

i can show you some pics from my s5600, but not from a s5700.

btw, it is a bridge camera - not an entry level DSLR. A DSLR has a mirror etc and interchangeable lens, the s5700 is a similar setup to a compact but in a mini-dslr style body.

can see the size diff there from the s5600 to the nikon d50 (dslr)

Yup the fuji is a bridge camera (a bit of a mutant half compact, half slr). It doesnt feature the swappable lens or mirror system for a view finder (although it has a view finder, you are actually looking at a small lcd screen rather than straight down the lens).

Tis a great camera for the money though (y)

yes great value for money, and getting it and a 2gb for £115 is blinding value.

yes they are pretty awesome compared to similar cameras at the same price.
pretty much ONLY bettered by its big brother the s6500 (MUCH better screen, and viewfinder). and got a 28mm lense (wider) rather than the s5600/700's restrictive 38mm :( (the reason I'm selling mine, way too narrow).

some sample pics, feel free to browse my photbucket, pretty much everthing on there is s5600, theres a few mk1 d1, and a few from various film cameras (y)(y)

I've had a few problems with mine, 1) dirt HAS got inside the lense housing, and its a sealed unit, CANNOT be removed to be cleaned (n), 2) everynow and then it corrupts entire memory cards, but then this happens with ANY digital camera.

i think all i can say is 'Wow', i cant wait to get my hands on it and play (y)

some of those photos look fantastic, i did read about the memory card problem on the 5600 but i think that was resolved on the 5700 (y)

Thanks faster4_tec, really appreciated (y)

Cheers went in to Jessops and had a look at the S5700(£119 with voucher), S8000(£240 Jessops £190 elsewhere) and Olympus 560UZ(£369 Jessops £219 elsewhere), bang for bucks the S5700 was the best.

Wanted it in black anyhow, so come home remember you said you got mem card too, SanDisk Extreme III SD Card 2GB (Electronics) i assume? Went via quidco and get an extra 4% back. So all in £120 Bargain! (y)

the extreme is worth the money (the 3 anyway). only costs about £6 more than a cheapo xd card, but writes and reads A LOT faster.
very useful for downloading at home.

but also helps speed up the write speed for multiple shots infinatly, and for raw files its a god send :D

also worth noting, NONE of the photos I posted were shot in raw, they were done in 5mF jpeg mode. using full blast RAW will = a lot less noise, and the ability to change white balance ON THE FLY :p

well i've had about an hour to unbox it and have a little look and i'm inpressed with the macro! its pretty good for real close stuff.

i cant wait to go exploring at the weekend and see what i can do, the auto mode sometimes gets things right but i really need to have a good read and a play to see what happens (y)

EDIT: i got one of play's 2gb ow brand cards for £7.99 IIRC

You have to remember that the auto mode is only making the best of the situation you are giving it and that all auto exposures are a compromise. Whether it is right or not doesnt come into it, it's always right. The problem is that what's right isn't necessarily what you want to be right, and thats where photography becomes an art :)

How did you take this photo lol

Got it today, any suggestions for a bag, slightly oversized for ease of getting in and out with room for spare battery's etc. Also suggestions on a decent but compact strap rather than the crap neck strap which comes with it.

for my d50 i use a slingshot aw100, it is just the right size for my camera, spare lens, battery, torch, gloves, spare torch etc so should give you plenty of space with an s5700

Ermmmm no thats way too big..

I have a Lowepro Topload Zoom AW for my SLR which looks to be a tad smaller and the camera would rattle around in that like a trolley jack in the boot of your car.

I have a hahnel SLR topload bag about the same size as Rezo TLZ 20, i see they do a Rezo TLZ 10 so i'll see if i cant try that as it would be more suitable and has a camera of near identical looks to the s5700 pictured with it.

PLAY

Could have got 10% off it if i ordered with the camera... oops. Its also a few pennies cheaper at amazon, and a few other places, and cheaper at Pixmania but without postage and i HATE pixmania...
