Totally OT: Dead mobo?

I'm currently looking at a mates computer as it will not boot.

You turn it on, power comes on but then nothing. No beeps, nothing on screen.

Have removed all devices (sound card, gfx, network, cd drives, hd) and still nothing.

Have also tried taking memory out... nothing. Swapped them around and tried just in dimm2. Again naff all.

Mobo has power but tried a different PSU and it still wouldn't play.

So I'm guessing its a dead motherboard. If this is the case, would it have taken cpu with it?

Its an Asus K8V-MX running a s754 Athlon 64 3400+.

I seem to remember from days of old when cpu died, it would take out motherboard (or vice versa) so I'm wondering if both will need replacing?

Or am I missing something here and barking up wrong tree? :)

Try a different CPU - Chances are CPU is fine and motherboard is dead.

HOWEVER,

If you take the CPU out and try to boot, the system will recognise this and still give you bleeps. If not, then you know the motherboard is dead.

(How do I know this? I turned a PC on accidently without a CPU one day about a month ago;))

Taken out the cpu and.... nothing.

Looks like a new mobo needed!

Definately sounds like a dead MB.

Chances are the CPU should have survived unless something drastic happened.

Any chance your mate has a spare MB kicking about that he can use to check it out before splashing out on new equipment?
