I've got a 1999 Fiat marea weekend (estate). right hand drive. I've got a tear in the rubber boot where the left side axle connects to the transmission. It's leaking fluid, presumably transmission fluid. Is the boot itself replaceable, and is it easy to fit on securely? I've got a good place for second hand parts not far away, and a fiat dealer not far away as well.

On the one hand I'm wondering about doing the job myself, I've changed an axle once before (on a Toyota Camry), and I struggled to get that socket for the axle nut and a long armed ratchet. I've got a good place for second hand parts not far away, I could probably get the axle

I'm also wondering whether I can get away with driving the 25 miles to my mechanic on Monday. Before driving I could do a temporary repair of the hole with some duct tape or something, and then fill the reservoir with fluid.

Or should I just get towed.

Any thoughts or advice would be much appreciated.

I assume it is a 1.6 as those have boots that seal the outputshafts.
Just get new boots, possibly bearings if they are bad (bearing on shaft, boot on it and other end of boot on transmission).
I assume that by second hand parts you mean new non-fiat parts and not second hand used parts.
Better replace both sides while youre at it.

I drove some over 100km when I had them fail, noticed as shifting started to feel different.

If you dont feel like opening the driveshaft nut, just disconnect brakes, the shock, tie rod end and lower balljoint.
The right side has support on the engine.
