I asked this very question Security staff at my place of work less than a week
ago. The answer is "No" if used in small amounts, but "Yes" if there's enough of it. Facial reconstruction would almsot certainly not set a detector off, but an artificial limb made out of the stuff probably would.
 
My Dad has metal pins in his arm - and he doesnt set detectors or that off... but, my work has a baton scanner thingy for staff searches to stop/deter theft and the pins in his arm set that off :)
 
I've got metal pins/plates/rods in my back, legs, feet, jaw and hip.
Some stainless and some titanium - never set off any detectors yet, airport or otherwise.

It does register as a metal but not as dense if you get what I mean?. A small amount of iron/steel will set it off where as you need a much larger amount if its titanium.

I know a fella who was in the armed forces who had to take xrays of all the bullets and shrapnell and the steel plates holding him all together lol. Just so the airport security will let him through without being bum searched :rolleyes:
 
I have 2 pins in my ankle, I have not yet set off any airport detectors but I used to set off the handheld detector at work whe we got swiped out :)
 
A teacher at school had a major heart operation, he had ribs cracked open and they were then stapled together. He was given a certificate for security if they did set it off. So yeah sometimes they do!
 
Hello ff , i have a titanium plate holding me knee together and its been there for 23yrs - no probs with metal detectors at airports,neither do the screws in my lower back , sometimes the pins,clips,staples the use for operations like Mills705 are steel based titanium coated and generate a field strong enough to set off metal detectors, i beleive the titanium coating is to stop it reacting/rusting inside the body.

I'm a little out of my depth here, but I think metal detectors can be set to certain tolerances in as much as the authorities know that certain weapons are the main threat to aircraft security. For instance, knives, guns and grenades are the ones to look out for, whereas craft knives (9-11 notwithstanding) are not much of an issue. During 9-11, although craft knives were used to threaten passengers and crew, it was the threat of explosives that (almost certainly) didn't exist that persuaded everyone to toe the line.

Having said that, Stanley knives and small lock knives as well as things like Kubatons are routinely picked up on Airport scanners.

There was some concern a few years ago about the Glock 17 and 19 semi automatic pistols which were made of a composite material. Ultimately though the barrel, receiver and shell casings are made of steel and the bullets of brass; all of which will show up on detectors.

most of these metal detectors are overrated from what ive seen.

ive gone on holiday wearing a leather jacket with 9inch stainless bullet studs on and walked straight through a detector and not set it of yet my dad has managed to do so with just his teeth.


although saying this we went in the glen canyon dam at lake powell where it was a federal offense to even talk about a knife never mind carry one:)rolleyes:) yet unintentionally(didnt realise he still had it on him) my dad walked round the dam with a 4inch pocket knife on him despite getting patted down

Ever considered you've been ripped off? Maybe they're plastic not stainless after all.

nope i know theyre definately steel. the stainless bit ill only find out with time mind.

combination of time out from here for a while, working, doing chores (pressure washing,sanding teak oiling/sanolining(spelling) the garden furniture as apropriate, helping plumb in the new bath and retiling etc), sorting out my paperwork and interview for my HND and a load of other things. basically just been busy doing other things:)
 
I have a Titanium pin/nail in my right Humerus (upper arm) and it has never set off any metal detecting device.
I suspect that the fact that is wrapped in bone, muscle and skin prevents it being detected.
 
It's dependant on the conductivity of the type of metal, so chances are titanium won't set a detector off unless it's a relatively large piece or passed close to the detector. That's why Vimto could pass through with stainless steel studs as it's another poor conductor, whereas his dad's teeth (maybe gold) would have a very good conductivity.
 
I think it's hit and miss - I've passed through with a large belt buckly and not set them off then on other occasions the same buckle has caused the thing to beep before I've got near it.

My nipple bar set off the scanner in majorca but that was about a week after 9/11 so I guess everything was set high.

Since then I've walked through with keys in my pocket (whoops!) and it's not set it off.
