Okay, a question to all 1.4 / 1.6 Tipo owners...

How long in time / distance does it take your car to warm up these days?

I've got a 1995 blue 1.4 i.e and a similar (slight engine differences) 1994 silver 1.4 i.e.

I've had the blue one for 8 or 9 years, and it's always taken about 5 miles before it gets warm - no good for demisting etc but I've assumed that it was normal.

Now when I first got the silver one it wouldn't warm up so I changed the thermostat, after this it would reach operating temperature ok - problem solved.

But now I've started using the silver car regularly, I see it warms up really fast, perhaps 1/4 temperature after only 1 mile and normal shortly after. In all cases I have the heater off to speed the warm up.

So the question is, do these figures sound correct? Obviously I'm now thinking that the blue car perhaps has a thermostat problem, it does seem to run a bit rich.

Any thoughts?

I live in Greece and during the winter (with temperatures around 10oC) it takes approximately 5-10 minutes for the temperature to reach the normal level and settle. Actually, the indicator starts to move after about 2 minutes and then moves faster until it reaches the normal level.
I own a Fiat Tipo 1.4 i.e and from what I know it doesn 't have a thermostat problem. Actually, all thermostats have been changed during the years.

Sounds ok does that, as long as the temp gauge settles just under or at the middle when hot with the fan cutting in and out if it goes over. The blue one sounds like it has a problem somewhere in the coolant circuit. Most proberly an air lock or faulty thermostat.

Hi, I've had the same problem with you....it took too much time to warm up(8-10 min) first i change the thermostat and then i change the cold-start valve. Now i start the engine and without driving it takes about 3-5 min to warm up.

Cold start valve? I didn't know about this - where is it and what does it do?

I also suspected the temperature sensor that controls the SPI, I think some diagnostics in the past had shown an intermittent fault and the wiring had been repaired. Sometimes the engine revs up and down if you re-start it when it's nearly warm. Are these components difficult or expensive to change?
