If its a DGT model, yours should be the 5M box with 200mm clutch as opposed to the C513 which used a 190mm clutch. You may find the flywheel is different and spindle different. I would look out for a 5M box off a DGT. Have you tried 24/7 breakers?

Hi Andy, thanks very much for the reply. I'm new to this forum, so please bear with me whilst I get to grips with the system.

The car is a Tipo 1.6 Brio 1992 with cable clutch. The gearbox started playing up when I found I had problems getting into 1st 3rd and 5th.
I've been trying to find out what type of gearbox is fitted, so I can change it out myself (money being tight!)

Please forgive my ignorance with all things FIAT, I'm new to the brand. What is the DGT model?

Gearbox

Hi, I have a gearbox from a tipo turbo diesel, but am unsure how different it would be to your box. I do know that it has a higher final drive, and if need be, can get further info from the garage where it is. I bought it last year, but did not ever get round to fitting it to my car.

The DGT model tipo was the digital dashboard display model on the series 1 tipo (certainly sold late 80's to early 90's, ) Earlier versions may have run clutch cable but can't be certain, so hopefully somebody can confirm this for you. Regards, chris

If its cable, you have a 5M box. To use a C513, you would need to sort the hydraulics out. So find an early box from a 1.4 or 1.6 [pre 1993 carb engine] There are plenty around in scrappers. £50 about right for one.

Great information coming in......thanks alot guys. (y)

Is 5M the Bell housing type?

So 5M Box is the way to go. I'll keep looking out, and keep researching all things gearbox. Any information is always greatly received.

Make sure is g/box before you change !! Common for linkage to seize on steering rack fulcrum causing that prob, making you think is box, have seen gearboxes changed at great expense when there is no need to !!!!

Maybe be linkage seized on steering rack not gearbox double check, have seen loads of gearboxes changed at great expense when not needed. It gives the same symtoms !!!

dito.check the linkage.as said common fault, and very unlikely for 3 gears to go down at once.remove linkage from box and select by hand, this will tell you 100% whats at fault......................

good advice indeed. I'll do that right away.

I'll let you know what I find. Thanks again for all your help.

Alan:)

I've just fitted another gearbox, and the problem is still there.
I've hhad the linkages out, and all seems fine. I can select gears on the box with linkage removed. The car jumps out of 3rd & 5th, only when going around
right hand bends. I am now think it may be worn engine mounts causing the problem. Think I may lash the engine and gearbox up, and see if it makes
any difference! :bang:

I've taken off the "reaction linkage" which is attached to the gearbax to see what effect it would have, and the gears now change as they should.
The gears don't have the "H" pattern as before (off to the left), but now i'm sure that it's the engine mountings that are the root cause of the problem.
I've bought a new set, and will be fitting them this weekend!!
