General thinking of buying one advice please

we as i say, we are thinking of getting one to convert to a 2 berth camper.had many different fiat so better the devil you know and all that.but would like to know are they more high maintenance than a car as this would be my first van. and what's the bad stuff to look out for when buying, and what makes them better than say a ford transit?

Buying one what? Secondhand?
If a 244 model (eg 2.8 JTD), have a look at https://www.fiatforum.com/ducato/205055-common-faults-244-model.html for common issues.
If an X250 (current) then appears (ie, this is hearsay! ) that 3.0 L model is good, but keep away from 2.4 L because of reversing judder problems.

i am think about 2000 something i can convert my self will be a lot cheaper, than something ready done unless some one out there know otherwise?
as for model mentioned i know nothing about them at all.

Check g/box and linkage operation by driving the van when its warmed up.
Many of these with high milage have g/box problems, ie crunching when changing up or down.
You may not notice this on a cold g/box.

thats handy to know my little suffers with the crunchy gear so will watch for that
