Hey guys.

Been ages since I was last on here

Anyway I have just recently passed my driving test hooray!

I went and viewed a mk2b yesterday active 8v model. Loved the car but I need some advice the mileage on her is 128k should I be concerned that it's too high? I mean it seemed well maintained for 53 plate? Advice please guys

It is getting on a bit and would expect that reflected in the price. There are cars with half that mileage that are scrap and cars that are running happily well past that mileage. All depends on how it was cared for. Corrosion would be the big question at that age. Private sale or is warranty/ MOT coming with it and how much and how long would you plan to keep it? There are plenty of fish in the sea and don't let post test euphoria blind you to hard economic facts. Actually liking a car makes up for a lot of shortcomings but won't be lighter on your wallet. :)

My 54 plate on 114k is getting tired now, and will soon need updating, mine is also the 1.3diesel so much better for crunching the miles.

An 8v on that sort of mileage is going to be very tired indeed, don't just think what you can buy it for now but what it's going to sell for in the future or will it just be scrap?

Spending a few hundred on the car plus a few hundred keeping it running and it could all be money down the drain if it's not worth anything at all in a year or two

Hi

Thank for the response.. I'm thinking a year then get something better next year, he's selling it for 400 which I thought wasn't too bad

Hi brendan

Thanks for your response I appreciate it! It seemed well maintained the body work had a few little marks but went for a test drive and it felt smooth he's had some work done on it recently with the exhaust back box. I did mention corrosion funny enough and yeah he said that something about it not being kept by the sea and sea air lol.. wasn't paying attention

Private sale man. He's looking for a quick sale.. yeah I know but I'm finding it difficult to shop on a budget with insurance being ridiculous too..

I had a 54 plates for 2 years, I've owned a MK2 and MK2B, neither broke down on me but did have their problems. Both had oil leaks seems to be very common on old fiats, only in small amounts though. The MK2B exhaust went on me three times, different sections though. I had an on and off problem with the power steering, I was told it was a hose linked with it that was on its way out? Other than that they're solid cars especially for the price.

Thanks jpeake94 yeah my mum had a mk2 and the power steering is common. Because it's electric and few other bits but she was an x reg and lasted until 2013! So yeah.. They are solid cars just the oil sumps are naff apparently

people who say that are usually the ones who buy a non serviced car, and still dont put few squid in to service per year, and then after some time parts are finally breaking down one after another

That is true haha.. The bloke who said it to me is always spending out on parts

My mum's punto has done over 139k miles and that still seems to be going strong
It does have a few issues at the moment though (oil leak and gearbox rattleing)

'Just ignore them,

Look how 'many punto's are on the Road,

if they was 'junk wouid there be so many., punto is one of the most popular cars out there, cheap to run and cheap for parts,

Exactly! Ive always liked the punto, my aunt had a mk1 when it first came out and my mum had a mk2 and my other aunt had mk2b which I really liked... I think im just going to buy it!

I mean this is what it looks like :)

condition and it's past are everything,

take another look with somebody who maintains cars - and drives something modern (with low miles)

then they will notice all the odd handling, strange noises, heavy clutch / pulling brakes etc

there is nothing "wrong" with a higher mileage FIAT, as long as it's in sound condition.

TBH checking out the basics, and a long MOT - £400 is fair,
Charlie

I went for a test drive with him and there was no whurring noises from the steering wheel, and brakes seemed fine, only issue i could spot was i needed a new bonnet cable as it snapped, and a bloody good hoover inside ha but my friend is adamant its too high mileage and i should buy a clio..

Clio ! With friends like that, who needs.........................................:)
Seriously, did you snap the cable or had it been that way for some time ?
