Ever since television has been part of our everyday lives there has been a fictional Police programme for every generation. In the '60s it was Dixon of Dock Green followed by Z Cars. In the '70s there was Softly, Softly as a follow up to Z Cars and the racy (for its time) Sweeney. There was the slightly less believable Professionals and the very unbelievable Dempsey and Makepeace. The one for the '90s, or was it the '80s, was the Bill.
Personally I'll miss it. It showed a lot of different facets of Policing from the high flying senior officers to the very fly officers to the plodders like Stamp and Reg Hollis. We have a bloke at our nick called Ollis. Anyone care to hazard a guess as to what his nickname is?
A few months ago I saw some cleaners putting rubbish bags in the boot of their car and then drive off in the works van. I was on foot and couldn't get to them but I managed to shout up a car and the two Cops found them and brought them back. The evidence was found. All we had to do then was work out where the theft had taken place. Found out in an hour. They coughed to it and had their houses searched.
That was that rare creature we call a "Bill." In other words a case solved the same day as the crime took place. In fact from theft to charge in less than the length of time a programme of the Bill is on the box.
