I have a brava 1.6 sx.It over heats and coolant comes out of the expansion tank.dose it need a new thermkostat I have taken the housing of how do I get the thermostat uot of the housing thanks

You don't - the thermostat and housing are supplied as a single unit, about 40 quid from Fiat.

What temp is the water? They don't open until 80-85deg.

Yes it does open and close thank you.But I took it of as the car was over heating and the coolant was comming out of the expansion tank.I checked if there was water in my oil and there was not.Then I dumped the coolant and cleaned it out with clean water and refilled it with new antifreeze + water.The top pipe was hot and the bottom was cold,thats why I took the stat of.Can and air lock just happen like that thank you for your help

when I refilled it I closed the cylinder block drain plug(is this where I went wrong)then I bled the air from the rad plug.But can you tell me if a air lock just happen thanks

its airlocked cos you drained all the coolant and let air in.
Did you bleed the hose at the rear of the engine? Did you bleed it with the heater ON?

no I did not bleed the hose.But now can you tell me the best way to start from scratch well after I put the stat back on.Which pipe not to put on before I put coolant back in and which bleed screw to leave open.Thank for your time.

Put all the pipes back on.
Put heater to max hot
open bleed screw on rad
add coolant until it runs out of rad bleed screw
do up rad bleed screw
undo bleed screw in pipe behind engine
add more coolant until it runs out of bleed screw
do up bleed screw
start engine
allow to warm up for a min or two but not too long
open bleed screw on pipe behind engine
rev engine until water gushes out
close bleed screw
check heater works
if heater works then job is done

open bleed screw on rad
add coolant until it runs out of rad bleed screw
do up rad bleed screw
undo bleed screw in pipe behind engine
add more coolant until it runs out of bleed screw
do up bleed screw
start engine

rev engine until water gushes out
close bleed screw
check heater works
if heater works then job is done

thanks tom the thermostat and the heater works ok.I only took it off in the 1st place as the coolant was comming out of the expansion tank.When I renewed the coolant it was minging I hope this is the reason why.thanks
