thermosat where should it be???????/

hi i have a 1.8 135,000 miles original thermosat.

anyway if i cruise at about 100mph the temp gauge is on 1/4

back road thrashing and normal driving 1/3

stuck in traffic 1/2 way and maybe 1 notch pass and then the fan turns on.

is this right? i get about 84 miles to a ten pound note. what would happen if i change the thermosat or should i keep the original??

bumping it up as i need help coz my car has started to over fuel ie it back fires on gear changes

that temp seems fine to me, mine is usually half way in traffic and my fan kicks in. unless it goes over the half way limit i wouldent worry,,,but i am hardly a mechanic and if your engine blows up on the way home dont blame me !! lol

Stat is on the battery end of the cylinder head. Its the bit with 4 or 5 water pipes going into it. Well on a 1.6 it is anyway!!!!
If you get it changed make sure you bleed the system properly afterwards. See the thread "Block test" from last week....all will be revealed.
The part costs about £50 from Fiat only I'm afraid.

I believe its different on the 1.8. As usual the 1,6 is a bit of a pain as it has the wonderful integrated stat housing.

Best thing would be to look in the Haynes manual.

Checked the Haynes bible last night, and it appears the 1.8 is v.similar to the 1.6. The 1.2 looks easy - just 1 water pipe to take off, but the 1.4, 1.6 and 1.8 look the same - loads of hoses. If its the original stat, the hose clips will be a right pain in the butt.

There is a trick to them, either use big wire cutters or use a smallish flat blade screwdriver to lever the clip off.
