I wondered how much a fix would be, which part failed? I worry about the gearbox on mine I did ask fiat about a salespeed service yet they didn't answer me. What can be done to protect the gearbox guys?
The gearbox itself is really just a conventional manual gearbox so doesn't require any more servicing than a standard manual box. It just uses the robot in place of the gear lever selector mechanism.
Any servicing
MES and cable are essential. You can also diagnose faults. A common fault at this age of car is the accumulator which causes car to go into neutral and give strange faults when the system goes outside the pressure range of the hydraulic system giving the false impression there are faults with the pump, relay and actuators. It is a simple repair.
I replaced the clutch last year.(see my guide) Do a degradation test (
MES diagnostic procedure which only takes a few minutes) This will check the operation of the clutch and tell you how worn it is.
A couple of things I did while gearbox was out.
Change gearbox oil. (drain and refill with measured amount of recommended oil)
The selespeed oil. Remove the reservoir. Wipe clean with lint free rag and remove dirt from the narrow sump. I used fresh selespeed oil to clean. (I wouldn't use a solvent)
Refill with correct selespeed oil and bleed with
MES (simple)
MES is not a magic bullet but by interpreting the symptoms one can get to the bottom of things.
The pump can be checked for brush wear. The later ones last well and I just checked mine and reassembled as they were good.
