I have recently acquired a lovely little 52 reg orange punto 1.2 16v sporting. 6 speed, sunroof, reversing sensors etc. I have had puntos for about 5 years now but have always had the 8v versions. I may be wrong but the tappets seem very noisy. This may be normal as there is soundproofing fitted under the bonnet but does anybody know if this is normal?

It may be the hydraulic tappets (oil fed)
are dying or clogged up

Sometimes a decent oil change cures it

Some may even require the oil gunky oil squeezed out - and allowing fresh oil to be worked in
Or total cleaning required of them

The 16V engines have hydraulic tappets and the cam / valve noise (especially on startup and in cold weather) does depend a lot on the grade and quality and condition of the oil. I have a Brava 1.2 16V and I recently put some decent Lucas oil in... it is now quite tappy when cold. Should have used my normal favourite Valvoline Maxlife...

Do an oil and filter change using some cheap Diesel-spec 10W/40 oil, run it for a few weeks to let the extra detergents shift all the gunk that may be in various places and affecting oil flow around the engine and head. Then do another change with a decent quality oil and filter and see how you go.

Cheap oil and a flushing agent should also do the trick
(oil flushing agent)

but been cold is the biggest issue
oil takes time to warm up
While its cold its very viscous (Thick)
The engine takes longer to warm up as a result the oil takes longer to become less viscous (thinner) allowing the easier flow of oil

Ensure the correct oil is been used as well
For example 10-40 or 5 - 40 or 5 - 30 would all work fine here

Dont use thick stuff like 15-40 / 20-50 as that will ensure tappety noise tbh

Thanks everyone,I would have replied sooner but I forgot my login details. oil change sorted it but unfortunately I now know why the previous owner let the oil run low. the sump is leaking. have got a new sump and new exhaust gaskets to fix it but I just want to know, is a torque wrench absolutely necessary for the sump nuts or the exhaust manifold?

I would try to use one if you can. Do you want the torque ratings? I have them in my Hayne's manual.

Thanks, quaffle, I've got them already mate. 25nm for the exhaust and 10nm for the sump nuts, just didn't want to pay 30 quid for a torque wrench and use it once.
