Technical temperature sensor not working!

Hi ive got a fiat idea and recently the engine warning light came on and the the temp dial on the dashboard stopped working, after doing a diagnostic it told me it was a problem with "Engine coolant temp sensor 1 circuit"- so question is what exactly does this mean and how do I go about sorting it, also it seems to workbon occassion-maybe a loose connection??? Pls help!!!

Hi, sounds like a cruddy connection,
petrol or Diesel..??

appears to be =13 - sender unit under thermostat..,
