Ive just purchased a 1.9 turbo diesel bravo. Im not sure if the turbo is working, comparing it to other turbo diesels its not the same. It seems very sluggish through 4th and 5th. Also the top speed i can get out of it is 85mph on the flat. I can get this in 4th with nothing else in 5th. Im sure somethings wrong but have no clue what. Can anyone help please?

re TD100 performance

James, open your window, turn the radio off, hit the accelerator. If you hear a woosh then the turbo is working. If you don't it isnt.

Loss of performance can be caused by a lot of things.
Worn engine, burnt valves, broken down dieselpump, filthy air filter. The TD100 should be capable of 110 Mph so something is wrong.

My TD100 goes really well, so there is something wrong with yours. You should feel a push from about 2300rpm, most noticable in 2nd or 3rd, but still there in 4th nd 5th. In fact, if you floor it in 2nd it should take off like a scalded cat from about 2300rpm and be bloody difficult to control if you are doing anything except going in a straight line. It is a very lively car.

As the previous poster said, the turbo makes a whining noise which you can hear with the window open, but there is a thing called a wastegate that dumps excess pressure, and so if this has failed open then the turbo can spin as much as it likes, but nothing will happen. I don't know how to check for this though. Also possible are clogged/worn injectors, blocked air filter although your problem sounds more significant than this!
