Hi guys im getting a tappety noise on startup of the car, this goes away after about 5mins of driving though.

Is it anything to worry about? and how can i fix it?

Cheers in advance

will when was it last serviced? being a 1.4 im sure you will have heard of all the horror stories of the spray bar getting clogged??

Serviced in november. didn't touch the spray bar, you did mention it though? How easy of a job is it to do?

signew.jpg

easy enough, however with such a recent service,

Have you checked your oil? on my 1.2 it would be a little tappy (think 1.1 fiesta) but was only due to low oil, once i added a bit it was fine and dandy...worth a check

naw dude oil is fine. Is it below the rocker cover the sprayer? and what should i use to clean it up? would contact cleaner be ok?

signew.jpg

Will removed the oil feed pipe from under the cam cover and gave it a good clean out you maybe suprised by what gunk will come out. Get another spray bar from a scrapyard and keep one in a bath of diesel or parafin, then whenever you service your car, swap the spray bars over.

I would suggest an engine oil flush too.

However theres no guarantee that the tappety noise is down to the spray bar, but its a good start and good practise.

Am i right in thinking the spray bar is under the rocker cover? bit with the fiat logo on? and nothing will come flying out and be lost if i do take it off?

signew.jpg

Thats correct. Nothing should fly out. Get a haynes if in doubt. but its fairly straight forward.

give it a very good clean, once you have cleaned it up a little you should be able to see the very tiny holes where the oil is sprayed from, make sure there is no grit or crap in them,

also from memory it will come apart into two pieces i think, flush some petrol through. i also blew down mine ;)

guess the oil sprayer is the bar that goes across and over the cams?

Ah thats brill stephen. doing that though, made me wanna take the whole engine apart! best not though ...

signew.jpg

as you can see its only held on with 5 bolts, camshaft looks in great nick!! looks hardley worn. like joske says it may not sort your problem but i doubt its ever been off in 14 years!! may be an engine flush next if this dont sort the problem?

Ok so thats done, hasn't fixed it, cleaned the pipe out joske suggested too, man that was filthy! so i duno where to go from here ... :(

Hmmm. I guess it could be crap oil. I put Shell Oil 10-40 once into my 1.8 HLX and it sounded noiser. Then i changed the oil after 1500 miles with Selenia and the car went much more quieter. Hence why i only use Selenia in my Fiat/Alfa.

Hi

Ive been rebuilding my 1.4 12v engine. Id check the sprayer bar but also there are eight rubber bungs that the sprayer bar sits into.

These eight rubber bungs control the oil flow to the twelve tappets, through nothing more sophisticated than a pin hold in the bottom of the rubber bung.

The bungs just pop out once the sprayer bar is off, Id pop them out and check they are clear.

Cheers
Adrian
