Hey guys,

When the engines idling my Bravo has quite a loud tapping/ticking kind of noise

Is there any chance this is the tappits and if so are they easy/expensive to repair?

(y)

hi check it for oil mine was doin it so checked the oil and it stopped hope this helps

hiya, thanx for that, someone has actually suggested an oil change to me so i think i'll try that

What oil does it need? i've heard it has to be Fiat oil exclusively?

I would personally use this time to do a full oil and filter change.

If its a new car then get the garage to do it or DIY it. but get the best oil you can I normally use duckhams or castrol if the cars a little newer.

Tapping can be two things Big end knoking or the tappets. the tappets can normally be ajusted slightly. if there not too bad. the big end sounds bad. but depending on the car its not allways too much. I have done big end shells on a vauxhall cav before at home. took me a whole day but that was mainly due to the massive oil spill. for got to drain it first. DOH.

depends what engine you have.

if its the 1.4 then its tapping because the head isn't getting enough oil curculation so the hydraulic tappets aren't getting enough oil to correctly adjust the valve clearances. the excess gap allows a tap as the rocker strikes the valve.

to solve it you can use 2 cans of engine flush, have it running for half an hour with the flush in, then drain it and use fully synthetic 10w40 oil, castrol is my 1st choice. dont forget to change the oil filter before adding new oil.

if it still taps after that you'll need to remove the sump and clean inside the oil pick up pipe, then remove the oil flinger bar from the head and give it a good clean.

how do you adjust tappets?
thanx

if you have hydraulic tappets then they adjust automatically.
if they arent hydraulic then you should adjust them at least every time you service the car.

you will need a feeler guage
you will need to get the inlet and exhaust clearances from haynes
you will need the "rocking pair" to "pair to adjust" table so you know which you should adjust when any pair is rocking. (haynes) although if you know the firing order you can work it out yourself easily.

remove the rocker cover
remove the spark plugs
put the car in gear
push the car while watching the rocker arms moving. you will see a pair "on the rock" (one moves up while other moves down). depending on which pair is rocking you need to check and adjust another pair, for example if 1 & 2 are rocking get them level then adjust 5 & 6. (example only!). once you adjust a pair you continue to push the car until the next pair are rocking and repeat until all 8 have been adjusted.

its much easier than it sounds. using a haynes its a 15 minute job.

If it is a 1.4 they are hydraulic tappets.

The tappets on my 1.4 are a bit of a sore point about 6 months ago one theese bastard snapped resulting in four new valves and 12 new rockers, and I had to replace a 3 month old cam belt because the crank stripped the teeth off it.
