Hi there.

Just noticed a strange noise when engine is idling (usually drive with radio on).

When I stick my head in the passenger footwell can her tap tap tap tap tap tap tap tap tap tap in tune with how the engine idles.

Any ideas what this could be?

Unlikely, though not impossible to be coming from inside the car, so I would suggest opening the bonnet and put your head towards the rear of the engine compartment, near the passenger footwell.

Make sure any tie, scarf or long hair is out of the way!

hydraulic tappets?
something vibrating in either one of your 'gloveboxes'?
'transmission tunnel' panel vibrating?
something in your under seat passenger cubby hole... i had a screw doing this in mine took me forever to figure it out!?

I'll clean all areas of surround crap and report back (y)

Found anything yet? Is it a kinda metallic tapping noise?

If so, you might wanna look here https://www.fiatforum.com/stilo/178812-finally-rattle-gone-jtd-owners-read-here.html

If it is this then it's just abit of rubber on one of the gearbox mounts that hardens over time & gets more brittle in cold weather, no longer absorbing the vibrations as effectively as it once did. Mine has always done this when the temperature outside is cold, and the noise always comes from behind the glovebox area. Your mentioning of the passenger side & the fact the weather's getting abit chillier made me think it could be this.

I got a quote for replacing it, came in at about £50 part & £50 labour, but since it doesn't appear to cause any harm by leaving it & the fact i've spent quite alot on the car in the last year has meant i've never got it done.

Oh, and what's this 'For Sale' nonsence at the bottom of your posts? Am i gonna be single-handedly flying the flag for the Crystal Green Crew?

Yeah. There's a bus stop outside my apartment and it stops right outside work. Always walk places on weekends as I live in city. Can't sees reason to keep it. Can get a bus ticket for £45 a month. Fuel + insurance + tax is much more than that.

I had a similar thing also with my 53 Fiat Stilo 1.6... Turned out to be an issue with not enough oil... top the oil up and within a minute it stopped completely!

My car has a useless dipstick and its not easy to read the oil level as it is lol
