If i take the anti roll bar off, will it fail mot, and is it safe to drive without it, it must be there for a reason.

LMFAO is this a joke? If you remove your anti roll bar(s) your wheels will feel as if you and your car are drunk, they hold your bottom arms in place so yes its an MOT failure as its a major component.

Afaik the tester checks the state of the car compared to the ' as built ' condition. If a roll bar was originally fitted and it's missing it's the same score as being defective. The nct test here carries original emissions limits with the vin no so if you change the engine you can end up screwed.
Having said that I do know that some cars have no roll bars fitted to certain subtypes within a model range. Volvo V70 P2 for example - some had them others didn't because the fuel tank was too big or something, much to the surprise of owners who bought drop links on the bay on a whim.
