It's insurance renewal time in April, though if I were to find something before then, I could potentially swap which car I have insured.

To do this though, I'd have to pay, then pay for my renewal shortly after.

So, is it better to wait for renewal then pay to swap the insurance?

Just wondering if anyone has experience?

I pay yearly.

Surely the first payment would just be the difference between the 2 policies pro rata'd for the remaining period of the policy + a possible admin charge.

Unless you are changing along the lines of a 1.1 Panda to an Aston Martin the payment shouldn't be too much.

True mate. But what I'm getting at is if it would be more effective to change cars after renewal and pay for the change later on. Or pay for the change now, then pay for the renewal.

I'm thinking it might be cheaper to swap once renewed?

Wait until your renewal, don't renew straight away. Do a few insurance comparisons online. Tell your insurance company that you can get it cheaper than they are offering for your new car. They should either match or beat it to keep your business.

P.S I have work in insurance for a few years ;)

Yes, it's best to await renewal & then look to change insurers then. You could always ring your existing insurer now & ask them how much it would cost for the change of car. I would expect it to be negligible considering the short amount of time until your renewal date.

Actually they won't insure it haha. With my age and insurance group. Will wait till renewal see what they say

Tends to be the smaller companies and ones with nasty cover levels which will do this.

OP as others have said change it from renewal as there will be no admin then :)

There will be mate, I don't have a car to replace it with. I'll be renewing on mine then looking for another. Plus they'll charge for going to a higher insurance group car anyway...

If only I had a garage so I could get one now....
