Technical Sunroom / Skydome Problem

Hi All

I've suddenly found that my sunroof will not close! It opens fine, no strange noises but will not close unless I help it by pushing it shut from the inside while at the same time pressing the close button.

When trying to close the sunroof, I've noticed that the glass starts to move from the passenger side (the drivers side does not move). It moves a tiny amount (in a twisting motion) then goes back to fully open. It's as if the motor / linkage on the drivers side is not working! If I help the drivers side along by pusing on the bar under the glass, it will close.

Does anyone have any detailed diagrams of the sunroof system? I'd like to know if there's a motor at each side or just one motor with linkage to both sides.

Also has anyone on here had the entire car roof lining down? If so does this give full access to all the sunroof parts?

you can reach the mechanism by pulling the black pastic trim on each side of the glass. It's held only with double sided tape.

You should try greasing the rails first without removing the trim, it will probably solve the problem as I think there's only one electric motor.

Thanks for your reply. I've just had a quick look at pulling the black plastic parts off but they feel like they are cliped in and I don't want to snap anything. It also sounds like there is velcro under there! I'll give it another go later but really don't want to snap anything off. If I get them off will I be able to see the motor/linkages?

I don't think you'll be able to see the motor, you'll have access the to rails and the belt that pulls the glass. For the motor you'll need to remove the headlining from inside which is not an easy task.

It's normal for the glass to get stuck only one way when it's in need of lubricant because it much harder for the motor to close it than to open it.

Did you grease it?

As above, motor is under the headlining at the rear. The system should be annually serviced by regressing and cleaning the runners ideally. If this has never been done get it done pronto before reusing it

Thanks for you replies. I've spent a few hours sorting it out. It was the cables that pull/push the front brackets that were at fault. One had come away from the motor! Nightmare of a job but all working now. Also cleaned out and regreased the rear rails.

It's not an easy job and the motor is not easily accessible ( I only took down the rear half of the roof lining ). It's working again now, opens and closes wothout any problems.

Hi, great to hear yours is working again! I have a question though, do you or anyone else here have the partnumbers for the plastic black trim on the roof? Lost one on the highway, apparently it was broken by an automated carwash...

HI I have a similar problem. My sunroof failed, The dealer wanted £1200 to fix. As I understand their comments, the bowden cables in the sunroof chassis have failed. I understand the chassis with the cables are one part, Now I have a fitter, who do the job far cheaper than the Fiat dealer. What I need is the part number of the chassis. Can any body help?
Fiat customer service want me to take the car in to a dealer and let them have a look to identify the part. I know the dealer will charge me £200 juts to have a look.

I have the same problem and FIAT is asking for close to 600€ for each rail, If I could just get the cables...
