Sump Guard Thingummy

Does the fabric whatever material sump guard actually serve much purpose? The metal posts my landlord installed at Uni managed to rip it off, and I haven't got round to replacing it yet. Is it worthwhile, and if so, how much should a replacement be?

mine cost £35 + p&p i think. either way, they were cheapest. but thats for a punto HGT; Bravo should be similar?
