hi all
today we were on the way to school to drop my little one off and the engine stopped. rolled to a stop and tried to restart and nothing. engine turned over fine no warning messages or lights.
after waiting about 20mins it started fine. drove down a cul de sac to turn round got to the top to go and it happened again. another 20 mins and its been fine since.
after reading the forum have guessed at the crank sensor, or egr valve. but as the car pulls really well and is not sluggish in going for the crank sensor.
i'm going to have a go at cleaning the valve but before i go and get the sensor sorted is there anything i'm missing?
thanks
phill

Out of the two, def Crank sensor, EGR makes the car run rough but it will start.

I always thought if the crank sensor went the car wouldn't start at all not a deffo answer though

right can pick up a sensor for £24 so will get one leter on today after i have a go at the egr just to pre empt any problems later on.
my usual garage didn't have a time on how long it would take to change the crank sensor so what sort of money are we talking.
they said it look from the picture they had you can get at it from the top but what i've read on here it's accessed from the bottom.

24 pound is a good price for the saensor if ya do it ur self that's it give it to a garage it shouldn't take long prob arond 30 pound laubour I found a thread on here that is listed under crank sensor that shows u how to do the job

The crank sensor can be done from underneath but it's hard to get at it unless it's on a 4 post lift.

IIRC you also need a starbit or posi screwdriver. It's an easy job with a lift and the right tools.

I could be wrong but I believe there are two sensors, one crank, one something else(?) in reasonably close vicinity of each other. When I had this problem on my bug, my main dealer changed both sensors to be sure. Can't be any more help than that, sorry!

Panda.

hi all
had a go at the sensor today got the old on off fine, fitted the shiny new one. tried the car and nothing. have i connected it the wrong way or maybe not quite pushed it far enough into the block?
also the gears would not engaged once i got the car off the axle stands and i couldn't push the clutch down at all. left it for a bit and it seemed to be ok. scared in messed it up lol

Did u jack the car up in the right place only say as u might of snaged something have u checked the wires are pushed right on the sensor and not loose in any way

finally sorted it. it turned out to be the little rubber ring had kinked when i put the sensor in so it was just not far enough in.
took it out and fitted the ring properly and all seems well.
thanks for all thw replies fingers crossed its all sorted.
just need some alloys now lol
