Technical Sudden Power Steering failure in Marea TD 1997

I left the house on Saturday Afternoon and on my return home noticed a very strange clunking banging sound from the enging compartment so drove home carefully where I inspected the engine compartment to see specifially where it orininated from.When I started the car the noise never came back ( noticed the fan belt was worn and made note to replace).
Left home on Saturday night and while reversing out of the drive the steering failed completely, I can only liken the experience to driving an oil tanker in reverse whilst trying to turn.

Any Ideas on whats happened.
I have not checked the hydroscopic fluid level as yet ( it was ok 1.5 months ago)

I,ve had a littany of problems since dropping this car into the dealership to have the glow plugs, general service and breaks done.

Power steering pump busted?

Take it to a garage if you're not sure. You may further damage the whole rack if you leave it too long.

have you got this sorted i had similar problem turned out to be my crank shaft pulley on way out sorted it out now.
