Technical Stuck in reverse

Hi all
My daughter owns a 2004 punto manual. She called me to say it is stuck in reverse. Went down to rescue her and she is right. Gearstick is really stiff and won't disengage from reverse.
You can slip the clutch and start the car. In fact that's how I towed her home, engine running for steering and brakes, clutch to the floor.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

if you remove the battery tray and pop off the bottom gearbox cable from the ball joint if the gear box is ok the gear box will move out of reverse. In fact with the cables connected if you can get

some tiny movement on the bottom link and the gear lever is rock solid it will show already there is something wrong with the cable or gear lever.
