Hello everyone,

i have a 2003 fiat punto 1.2, when i turn the steering wheel i'm getting a spring like noise and it seems to be coming from the driver side strut area, i've checked the spring for any cracks and that seems fine, i know on some models there's a bearing race that you can split but this one just has the rubber mounting.

any ideas please ?

thanks.

Hi, and welcome to FF,:)

I'm intrigued by this.., as I've owned 3 x mk2's

only 1 needed attention, a 2001 sporting, and it was the top BEARINGS that needed a wash-out and regrease,
I've still got a spare (used) set ..

but ePER doesn't mention a bearing..??

It does not have a top mount with a bearing in it, but i've found the issue, the cup that sits on top of the spring is rusted so when the wheel is turned its grabbing the spring and turning the spring with it.

so to fix i'm going to take the cup off and grind down and smooth the underside of the cup and then smear it with copper grease.

Personally I would not use copper grease but Moly grease instead. Moly grease is fully waterproof and will resist the elements better than copper grease.

That did not work, still it twangs when turning the wheel, can anyone tell me which way the tab on the topmount should be pointing ? to the rear of the car or the front, also i've read that the spring cup tab should point away from the car.

So i will check this and then see what happens.

Fixed this issue, on the top cup that the spring sits into the tab needs to face away from the vehicle.
