Hi

My first time on this forum, so hello.I am looking for a little advice I have the chance to buy from a couple of Stilos or a Golf this weekend and I am test driving them on Saturday. The first is a 2004 53 plate Stilo 1.6 16v Active 5dr with 38,000 on the clock, second is a 54 plate 1.4 16 valve but has 57000 on the clock. The same dealer also has a 2001 51 plate VW Golf 1.6 SE, it has 41000 miles, they are all the same price give or take a few hundred. The Golf is in very good condition, as are the fiats, engines look clean. This is not from a dealership but a good old fashioned used car lot with minimal warranty etc. I am drawn to the 1.6 as it has lower miles and has olnly had one owner, but it will be more expensive to run and tax etc.

Should I be wary of the 1.4 and its relatively high milage?

Any help appreciated.

I'd go for the golf, I've heared too many Stilo horror stories tbh.

Although the stilo is a much better looker.

the golf isnt without its problems

to be honest i have a stilo and i dont see why there such slated cars, mines going fine and fair enough its had its odd problems, but what 35k 3 year old car doesnt :D

So of the 2 Stilo's which is the best bet? The 1.4 is newer, but 20000 more miles, better economically and in a lower tax group. I have read I will also get more miles to the gallon on the 1.4. However I would guess the 1.6 would be a better drive?
I really like the styling of the Stilo. My first car was a 1991 Fiat Tipo which I bought for 450 quid in 2002, it done me 7 months until the MOT was up, traded it in for 500, not bad. However it was a terrile car and the electrics crap!

Id go Stilo everyday! So much more special, especially 3 doors, you dont see many around at all. The thing with Fiat is that if something does go wrong, the spares are usually well priced compared to other manufacturers such as VW.

The spec is also far superior to the VeeDub, I saw a 02 plate 1.4 Golf with none of the toys mine has for £2k more than I bought my Stilo for. I dont know why you would pay more and get less??

I think the 1.6 stilo would be the best bet for me, less miles and more fun to drive, plus it is in slightly better condition. £3500 is the price which seems about average???

the way i see it when buying a second hand car is...

that you dont know what the previous owner has been like with it, alright you might think you are okay buying that car of the 60 year old dear, but she only uses it for going to the shops, taking it to third gear only, and riding the clutch . but then you might think buying a car from a 20 year old lad is bad as he might have thrashed it and wheelspun it everywhere when really he hasnt, its just the image :p

and also, you can have a good car and a bad car

my opinion from a stilo owner, i like the stilo but would have a golf instead, not had many problems in 20k with mine but ive always liked golfs.... and tbh anyone who slates german engineering is a fool.

you do get more gadgets with the stilo,
