Technical Stilo Servicing - the highs and lows

Low mileage service at Alan Kerr came to £82 . . . then Air Filter from Partco was £4 :D. All the belt checks were done at cam variator replacement, all I need to do is rear brake change and fluid change.

Was advised that my front pads are 75% worn!

1.4 Active (no aircon)

12k - £85 Souls Milton Keynes (charged as low mile service 6k on clock) - March 2005.

24K - £199 Perrys of Amersham - February 2006.

In my opinion, if you want to be absolutely sure that your warrenty remains intact, you'd be best going through a Fiat dealership. Otherwise, you'll have lots of paperwork going backwards and forwards, proving that the independant dealer is Fiat-approved.

Cheers

Absolutely NOT true, they do not have to be Fiat approved. ANY VAT registered place using genuine Fiat parts to the Fiat schedule can do servicing and Fiat CANNOT refuse warranty work there after within the warranty period. This is EU Law on competition. Fiat seem to charge too much for servicing IMO, other places can do it far more cost effectively. Your choice.

That will have a lot to do with the FIAT trained staff, overheads on a nice dealership, courtesy cars, tooling etc etc....

There is much more choice nowadays but there's a lot more factors than just the price.. IMO. Yes I'm swayed by having worked in dealerships for years but..

There are a lot of factors... not just price! Its up to each dealer to make your service VALUE for the money you pay out...

Car valet after service
Courtesy car
Waiting lounges
Collection and deliveries
Lifts to and from station
etc
etc

just these small things that people dont consider...

But make all the difference when done properly!

Having said all that I do understand that some people simply cant afford the higher prices...

I didn't say it HAD to be done by a Fiat dealership at all. I was merely suggesting that going through a dealership would be a way of avoiding many of the bureaucratic problems that can be encountered by going to a private approved outfit. I'm only speaking from my own experience, and that of a friend who has an Ibiza. In my case, it was all sorted in the end, but it took a couple of months, a lot of forms, and a number of visits to various garages before the situation was resolved. I'm glad you've had no such problems, but I was only offering advice based on circumstances.

Cheers

Not wanting to get into this old argument (again) but how many posts have people like NumanR/Fiattech,myself & other techs made here, given advice & pointed out things to watch out for on Fiats.Does a independant garage have this knowledge/know how/what to look out for during servicing? Cheapest isn't always the best in the long run.

I think everyone here certainly appreciates all the advice (at least I hope so) no matter what they say.

It's just a shame that so many (and by so many I mean even one is too many) FIAT dealerships are dreadful and seem to have no idea about the car they are working on.

Not just FIAT either. I good friend of mine is a mech for a Toyota dealership and he moans about some of the idiots he works with.

For me, I'd far rather take my Stilo and Barchetta to my local FIAT independant specialist (lucky enough to have one) instead of getting bent over and harshly penetrated by Arnold Clark.

Nationwide Autocentre (POOLE)

Service: 4th Year Annual Low Mileage + MOT
Upgrade: 2nd year with Castrol Edge 0W-30 fully-synthetic
Total Cost: £175.57

No real issues apart from the fact that my pads and discs are going to need changing soon  Not best pleased about that as don't like using the middle pedal so can't understand how that happened :D

Have posted further details
HERE

Fiat Stilo 2.4 Abarth

Aux belt tensioner failed so I had the 72000 mile timing belt change done at 65000 miles.

Got it done from Torque Italia (Fiat Specialist/independent) - website HERE based in SE London (Croydon/W. Norwood area). They are a very well known Fiat Coupe tuner, including Fiat Coupe 2.4 conversion (which I have on my Fiat Coupe).
Had the servicing done in October 2006 I think

Cost £390 for all belts, tensioners, uprated water pump (brass impellor to replace std plastic impellor). Would recommend the uprated pump and in general would recommend changing all tensioners at this interval as it is the cost of a whole belt job to change them later, and if the aux belt fails it can catch in the timing belt and take that out (luckily mine didn't)

I didn't get any other work done other than an oil+filter change at my request (as I will do them when it is actually 72000 miles)

i live in near a number of fiat dealers in the west midlands and as i need a 48k service soon i would call and get some quotes, however i was suprised how different the quotes were

Arnold clarke stourbridge £326
Arnold clarke oldbury £310, with discount due to cockup last time now £285
Bostons of Stafford £346
T J Vickers £330
Brindley W-Ton - awaiting confirmation of price but looks to be £350
Midland Fiat £180'ish but they are too busy until next Jan

anyone else know where i can get a 48k service any cheaper?

i thought all dealers have a fixed priced service so all should be the same?

I don't think you'll find there's that much difference between main dealers.

You could always take my approach and save yourself a fair bit (couple of posts back). I've got full warranty with all my books stamped and a reset service indicator :)

Do the pollen filter yourself - it's not that difficult (y)

At that price it would be one of those very rare times when told by the garage "we never actually changed the oil or any filters"

......would actually come as something of a relief :D

(the cost of the oil I use is something like £40 alone  )

13/03/2007 12K 1st service
1.9 JTD Dynamic
£239.27
Leaders Bootle Liverpool

When I queried the cost compared to their advertised major service cost of £119 - I was told "Cos yours is a warranty service, and yours is a diesel. The £119 service is for petrol and > 3 years old"

Alan Kerr

48k service, with MOT

£347 inc VAT with Pollen Filter

all fluids and filters changed
