General Stilo front discs - advice needed ASAP

Aargh :bang: lol.

I don't really want to get standard discs, cost about the same as well....

Time is of a premium here as well, things need to be ordered ASAP, and I can't rely on any 'net deliveries being late :(

I don't intend to take my car on track days, etc, so just want something better than standard. You are to the first person to say about the EBC disks warping early on, and I have received a lot of advice these past few days (y)

TBH, if I have to replace the buggers again, so be it - as long as I can get a good price on them, and guaranteed delivery, that is my main issue....

I am definitively not a fan of EBC. But I have had not a single case in my 25 years in the motor sport/performance tuning with EBC discs having a tendency to warp. To make such a bold statement you need to deliver proof.

With many years of dealing with Red Dot (when they traded under Tarox) I can't recall any problems. I can recommend them as a user myself on my cars, many customer cars and track cars. Still, I would not claim of EBC having a tendency to warp, whether I like EBC or not as I can't find it to be true.

40 grooves might sound nice, look good and brake well, but they cost a lot more than less grooves and wear down much qwuicker than 6 grooves.

I think we all managed to spoil your week now Stuart?

Oh yes, it is indeed a minefield - and I was so happy to get my car back yesterday, earlier than intended.

I am looking at the Red Dot and Tarox discs now, but prices seem a lot higher [obviously] - this is not a good time, just before Xmas as well :( [plus just forked out for driveshaft and a large vet bill ]

All I can do now is see what the tech comes up with tomorrow morning!

This has definitely been a learning curve for me, and everyone's advice is much appreciated :)

yes old school I do agree back here in Wales EBC are used extensivly by the trade and if they eat pads a little quicker so what changing the fronts 35 mins diy backs dont workas hard slower ware rate and I picked up a full set of pads £29-80p:slayer: long live fiat forum(y)

Hi mate, I fitted the black diamond combi's all round with greenstuff pads at the front and black diamond std pads at the back, you will feel the difference straight away, much more responsive and instant bite.
Got mine from motorsportworld too, quick delivery excellent service.

There you go Stu, you two have almost identical cars mate, so go with KK1's advice ;)

From what i remember, the motoring industry (including the insurance companies) say avoid drilled breaks, they don't disipate heat properly, and it does cause them to crack more frequently. Not too much of a problem if you're in a race car, cos you'll be checking and changing them after every race. Grooves disharge heat perfectly, that's what they're designed to do.

Sounds like you made a god choice... but did you tell your insurance company you uprated your breaks?

Stu,
I had drilled and grooved discs on the Alfa GTV and it made a world of difference to the brakes and no issues with cracking even after a year of use. Can't comment on the make since they were supplied and fitted by Autodelta. I'd personally have no issue with drilled discs and they look better than the dimple type by EBC. In terms of noise I didn't notice any significant change.

I currently have EBC greenstuff on the Stilo and have been more than happy with their performance even from cold.

My personal opinion would be get drilled/groove discs and EBC greenstuff pads which if I recall correctly I picked up for about £30.

Have you considered OMP which I've seen sold on ebay? I think they are an Italian make and seem reasonable value, think this guy sells them http://stores.ebay.co.uk/YB-PEUGEOT_W0QQssPageNameZviQ3asibQ3astoreviewQQtZkm

Are you goning to replace your brake fluid at the same time, would be worth doing, somebody mentioned to me that DOT5 is better under stress/higher temp, can anyone confirm this?

Look forward to seeing the pics!

Cheers guys!

I have been put off the drilled discs now from many other people, including a lot of Cento owners [who no doubt hammer their cars ;)], a FIAT tech who sees lots of issues with Alfas and cracked discs, and a few random people I was talking to in the FIAT dealership.

I had a look at the EBC dimples - looked fine to me, plus I got the 7 spoke alloys so you can hardly see them :)

As for telling the insurance company, I intend to once the work is completed on Thursday - as for the brake fluid, not sure, probably unlikely - but I will mention it.

I put on blackdiamond grooved only discs with the matching pads. Once bedded in performance was good, however after no more than 4 heavy applications they fade. I can only put this down to heat. I wont be buying them again.

Well, I have decided to go with EBC TGs - grooved NOT drilled for insurance purposes - and the EBC Green stuff!

I have got the whole lot for a VERY good price, so very pleased. If I have made a bad choice, I replace with something else next time (y)

Tbh, I valued everyone's opinion on here.

However, I have accepted my mate's advice, who works at FIAT as a tech, and who himself has them on a Stilo.

:woot:

Having had them fitted last week, I had to wait a few good miles to let them bed in!

BUT decided to give them a proper test today on my commute - the difference is certainly amazing, like any brake upgrade should be. They bite so well, and I can feel extra stopping power even in these conditions.

Will try and take some pics when I can (y)
