hi new member.
Got a 1.2 5 dr 2002 stilo. Ive been getting squeeling noise from brakes.
Done 26k miles since last had new brakes fitted. Is this average life span of brake pads/ discs. Car has had easy life ,town driving and rarely over 60 mph.

Dont realy know much about cars.. Feel that if i go into tyre garage the will tell me they all need changed.. easy money... big glass window sort of thing..

Most of these places will show you the worn pads (if they are worn).

You can always just drive away if you don't trust them as long as you ask if they provide a FREE inspection first

....but remember you can do a lot of damage to the discs if you just ignore it - and then it can get more expensive still :(

if it is a brake problem and your not sure what your doing still better to get them looked at...if you have alloy wheels you can try having a look with torch to see how much pad life is left and feel the lip on the edge of the disc for wear, could just be needing some copper slip put on them, the thing with doing them yourself is that you are sure they have been cleaned and copper slip which some garages tend to not pay attention to just to get the job done , but if your not sure better to be safe for yourself and others and get them checked

looks like i wil get a free brake check done.. just dont trust garages so think ill try two and compare.
still is 26k average life for discs/ pads. cheers

I would agree with mhowse ,if you feel up to it all you have to do is to whip out the pads clean up around the edges and where they fit into to caliper and apply some Copp:)erslip to the BACKS of the pads onle and this should fix the squeal,if however you don't want to fool about with brakes then the only option would be the dreaded garage,it doesn't sound that the pads are worn if you are not getting the low pad warning light.

Havent had any warning lights for the pads..
took front nearside wheel of today and i could see the pads which looked as they still had 6 months life left, so ill try that copper lube as suggested.
