Recently gear selection has become stiff between 1st & 2nd gears on my Fiat 1.3 Idea diesel multijet. Handbook says it has a self adjusting hydraulic system, does anyone have any ideas what may be causing it?

Thanks

The clutch is hydraulic and self adjusting, if the gear stick moves freely but you just have trouble getting it into gear then its probably the clutch, but if the gear stick feels stiff to move between selecting gears its probably the gear selection cables. If its the cables then it could be as simple as a sticking linkage the needs lubricating or it may need the cables replacing.

Lift the gear lever/knob gaiter, and you will see the cables that operate the change.
Spray some grease all down the cables and over the nylon ball......makes the system smoother, and sweet!

I recommend all car owners to do that............even if you don't have shift problems.
My IDEA, and PANDA ..........are better for that treatment.

Cars now developed a bit if a grind when trying to find reverse ....... all likages seem fine so the man in the overalls says it does need a new clutch ...... does any know approx how much this will coat ??

The easy way to make sure it isnt the linkage is try changing the gears without the engine running.

Our linkage went stiff over the winter and needed lubing but it was most noticeable in the across gate movement.

Not sure on clutch cost, but it shouldnt be too bad as clutchs go as there seems to be plenty of room around the gearbox.

It was the clutch !!!! Finaly gave out on Friday .... parts not too expensive an £95 but a long job quoting 5.9 hours labour ( 2 garages verified this ) so about £150 - £200 for that so looking at about £300 in total !! :-(
