Technical stiff gearbox

got my car at the weekend pvt sale and now after brother has looked at it proper the gear lever action is very stiff and the lever centering is non existent its a 57plate so cant have a recall done on it can I lube the cable or do I need new fitted if so how much am I looking at

It may not be the cable, it could be the selector shaft which goes into the gearbox. Quite an easy repair. Details here:
