Technical Sticky handbrake...

Oh well, got my self all psyched up to sort the brakes this afternoon... Got the back end of the car up on stands, got the wheels off and realised I have no bolts to drift the drums off the hubs... Well goddamn... Does anyone know what bols I need... They look like they mighgt be M8 but not sure...

I did however pick the new wheels up today... I'm sure Firstcar would approve...

UT rims?
bolts, M8? nah you want a big hammer m8;) teach it who's boss.

p.s. DISCLAIMER the author denies any responsibility for any damage caused by actually listening to these ramblings. Auto maintenence is a complicated business and should only be undertaken by skilled persons and not every job can be undertaken using only a big hammer....some require a smaller, precision hammer;)

:ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO: Another first class post!!!

If your hand brake is poor and you need to park on a hill this might help.

Push your foot brake hard on then pull on the hand brake .

This won't help an mot pass but could stop your car running away
As the hand brake levers are rubbish let the wheel cylinders do the pushing the hand bake will then hold better

Cheers, the handbrake is ok tho and the problem is that the little beggar just won't let go sometimes...

As far as parking is concerned I've just been leaving it in gear... Seems to work for the minute...

Hammers for all occasions currently in stock... Might take a bit of finding but I bet I have one that fits!! (unlike sockets... I broke my 1/4 to 1/2 adaptor yesterday but thats what you get for buying a set from Morrisons for £3.99!!)

Yes they are UT rims but in the interests of proper procedure I'll start another thread right now!!! :D

Another quick point - if your handbrake's only started doing this recently, could the cold weather be a factor? ie. your brakes are freezing on. This is not uncommon on many cars. Might be worth considering?

I feel a little bit of deja vu happening here. Even though my handbrake wasn't sticking it was increadibly hard to put on and wouldn't stick properly. I put it in gear as I don't trust it like many others have said!! Anyway as some of you know my handbrake finally gave up the ghost at the Gaydon Panda meet the other weekend and I have now had it fixed today with a brand new cable. The bloke at the garage was really good and even spotted a little fuel leak which he fixed for free...bonus! The trouble is they have spotted the timing belt is perrished and needs changing soon boo hoo!
Hope the investigation goes ok Luke and you are able to fix it.

Thanks for the suggestion... Fair point and noted for future reference(y).

In this case the handbrake seems to be bad no matter what the conditions and has seized on days when I haven't had to scrape the windscreen... In the light of posts above I reckon, given the symptoms, it is a case of the cable operated actuator being gunged up... If I can bring myself to do it I'll take some pics tomorrow when I pull Sparky to bits and see if I can get them from the camera to the computer in one piece...

Thanks again, Luke.

The photos are in the gallery... can't make them come here... not particularly enlightening anyway...

On a brighter note it all went well, very little wear on the drums or the shoes just a lot of gunge around the back where the cable and the lever are so cleaned it all up and plenty of WD40... I think I'll not go anywhere near those brakes for a couple of years!!! 1st rule of mechanics: Do'nt fix it if it ain't broke... Oh, I did find a hammer that fits:D...

Cheers all, I appreciate the help and advice...
