hello guys,

just bought a black 2001 punto sporting.... i've had bravo's up to now but after driving this little animal i couldn't resist.

i have a couple of problems though which aren't major but need sorting or diagnosing.

firstly there is a knock which seems to come from the steering wheel as i set off,, it only does it with my wheel turned to the right????

the other problems are that my indicator doesn't cancel itself,,, can i get this fixed under warranty??? and my drivers seat won't slide forward to let passengers out.

all the problems are just niggles but once they are sorted my car will be awesome.

cheers guys Oli

I think you're the second person I've heard about complaining about a steering knock this week. Last time I said I had no experience of it on Puntos but my dads rover had something to do with the power steering cable or something fouling the suspension. Of course afaik there is a slight noise from power steering on lock to lock anyway but I'd get it seen to, steering's not something I'd mess around with myself - too critical.

I've heard lots about the indicators before as well. Apparently, the stalks have always been weak - it's one of the more common grumbles. If I recall, people had them changed by Fiat without charge.

The driver's seat? Unfamiliar with it, but make sure nothing's fouling the rollers first. Check the handbook and make sure there's no strange Fiat-inspired way of moving it. Then get it looked at by Fiat. If it's bust Should be another warranty I'd have thought.

Hope you're in peak condition soon. This is interesting to me as I'm looking forward to lining up a mk2 sporting for my next car in the hopefully not massively far away distant[8D].

hi there i have a problem with my indcators aswell on my 2001 sporting they turn off but when turning right it has to be a sharp bend or it dont.

now as for the knock. i had this strange knock on my steering it happend when i reached full lock and then turned back at low speeds like getting out of spaces and very sharp corners, turned out to be "steering shaft asembly" had gone and cost £500 at fiat to get fixed tahnkgod for warranties is all i can say lol hope yours is somhing minor.

providing you under warranty you can get it fixed i would of thought. uptill march 2001 fiat cars only came with a 2 year warranty :( but from march onwards they came with 3 years.

Cheers guys,

i took the car to fiat yesterday and they are ordering me a new steering column. warranties are great. they fixed the other problems too. my car will be as good as new next week.:)

The knock will almost undoubtabley be a CV joint, the chair not sliding will be a broken linkage to one side of the sliding mechanism and the indicator has a small plastic peg that is pushed by the steering wheel to cancel, this peg may have snapped.

is the drivers seat meant to push forward?? mine doesn't neither...well its going to the garage soon anyway so i can get a list together for them...
while i'm ere, what's that quiet grindin noise comin from down below when applyin my crap brakes??

i got that noise aswell so anoying. either you breaks have really worn and you need new discs and pads or its just the fiat breaks lol i got mine checked was worried but garage could not find anything wrong. wasnt fiat garage and you could see he was desperate to find sumthing lol to make some money. but alas no. have heard other on here talking about the hard pads fiat use.

You will get that noise in the winter, its a mixture of wet/salt/grit on the pads and rust on the face of the disc (rust car appear on a disc face in under 30 minutes).
