Has any one had a rattle coming from the steering column on the underside below the steering wheel.
I have tried holding and pressing the mouldings to try to identify the offending panel but this does not stop it. Its infuriating. Can anyone help?

Has anyone got the i-pod / mobile phone holder accessory what sits in the cup holder. I am thinking of buying one. Is it any good? Will it suit most phones?

Lastly. How do you stop the radio from playing the MP3 player as a default other than removing the MP3 player. I like to keep it plugged in but sometimes prefer the radio.

1. Take it to the dealer

2. Not tried it myself

3. Read the manual :)

Mrs Gs 500 has a rattling steering column/dash.

The dealer thinks the rattle is coming from the dash I am convinced its the steering column.

They have all the dash out and its still there!

Going back to see if a second attempt can cure it - this time its the steering columns turn to be stripped etc.

It drives me nuts too:bang:

I had the steering column rattle for a while when weather got colder in the autumn. It was driving me mad too, but then all of a sudden it stopped. Only thing I did was to spray some gun oil into the column, but not sure if that had anything to do with it stopping.

The ipod/mobile holder is ok, but isn't particularly sturdy. It's also a little fiddly to use. If you can get one cheap give it a go, but don't expect too much

Pretty sure that the rattle is coming from the steering column but the car is going in to the dealer tomorrow hopefully to sort it out. Will let you know if it is fixed.

Can anyone help on the third point on my original message pasted below?

Read your blue&me manual :) All the answers are in there :)

Press blue and me button and say "stop" and the lady should say "playback stopped". Just say "play" to continue

Despite the car going back to the dealer on a couple of occasions the annoying rattle in the steering column persists. The last time the dealer had the car (yesterday) they said they spent 4 hours stripping the column down and re-assembling but still the rattle is there. It is so annoying that when driving the car it is all I hear. Even with the radio on I can hear it rattling away. Interestingly it is worse when the car is cold in the mornings. When the car (not the engine) has warmed up it is sometimes not as bad, in fact after they had finished yesterday it was considerably improved but was back again this morning load and clear. Dealer said they will speak to Fiat to find out if this is a common fault and ideas for resolving. Does anyone have any ideas for solution?
This is definately spoiling the 500 experience for me.

Say to the lady autostart off she will repeat that back to you. Now when you start the car the radio will be on and not the MP3 playing. If you dont want the radio on when you restart you have to turn it off before stoping the engine and taking the key out.

Thanks for the reply. From my original post I have the MP3 sorted. The ongoing problem is with the steering column rattle. Driving me mad. Spoiling my enjoyment of the car.

We had an annoying rattle from somewhere on the steering column of Mrs Gs 500 and like you it was driving me mad.

Eventually the dealer had it for two days stripped down the steering column, dashboard, headling etc.

Apparently there is a lot of loose wiring hanging around everywhere, and the dealer taped up/tied down anything loose and hey presto - peace and quiet:D at long last.

You have to push the dealer to go for it.

Dash rattles are always a pig to fix, the number of times I've found a cause of a rattle- fixed it- then found another rattle start caused by the vibrations finding the next (totally random and unrelated) part that can now be heard. I've driven Stilo's down the road with literally just the steering column bolted-in to locate noises.

The ideal thing is to leave the vehicle with the Dealer for a few days so they can spend plenty of time removing various parts until the source is located and cured. Having only an hour or so here and there means the Tech will only have time to try easy and most likely options, which don't always yield results.

I had a steering column rattle on a 500, and you know what it was in the end? The clutch footrest transmitting vibrations up through the heater box to the column area. Just shows that the cause of a noise and it's location aren't necessarily the same thing. ;)

I too get a rattle...... but just once a day! Twice some days only.

Every morning when the car is cold I get something coming from either the brakes or the steering (feels like it comes from both tbh) when I first brake AND steer slightly steer to go right. But then nothing from the rest of the day, I find it odd but not serious enough to visit my dealer. Would you if you were in my shoes, just in case it'd be the start of something more serious?

Me too. I had the same annoying steering column rattle when the car was about a month old. It lasted for a week or so and then miraculously stopped.
