Hi ive just made the intial mold for my sub box out of fibre glass, its going on the right of the boot. just wondering what the best way to join the mdf to it is? will i be able to just fibre glass to the side of the mdf?

will post a pic soon.

Are you planning to use real fibre glass or the P60 stuff you can buy (as shown in that magazine none of us read) :p

If the latter then you want to use mdf struts covered with chicken wire or equivilent for the basis of the enclosure.

I wouldnt suggest using real fibreglass unless you have some experience in it to be honest but there are plenty of guides on the internet for using it

cheers

Re: Re: Steath SUB!

Sorry, forget that - I misread, didnt realise you had already made the fibreglass mould!

Re: Re: Steath SUB!

P60 is nothing like as strong as real fibreglass.

Fibreglassing is just messy and smelly, apart from that its actually quite easy.

Re: Re: Re: Steath SUB!

Yes i used the real stuff. I just wondered if anybody else had made a stealth box and if there was anything to watch out for.

Thanks for the response. i will keep you updated with how its going. will post a picture tomorow night.

If anybody else desides to make one then i would advise lining you boot with bin liners (sealed with tape).

Try to use the correct amount of hardner as using too much can weaken the strength of the end result.

use lots of resin when you lay out the fibre glass. cut the fibre glass before you start getting sticky too! this i learnt the hard way and had to by some new scisors. also buy lots of brushes.

when your laying it out start at the bottom and work up the sides, take your time as you want to get it right the first time.

Thats my suggetions. anyone got anything to add or tell me if im wrong? sorry for the essay.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Steath SUB!

Oh yes, DO NOT try and cut wet CSM! It will gum up everything and you will be left with a rapidly hardening ball of crap. Been there, done that!

Once you've done the initial layup to get the shape you can take it out and finish it somewhere else. I'd think that coremat would be a good thing to use inbetween the fibreglass as it would add alot of strength. The whole point of a speaker box is that it doesn't flex. Bendy boxes mean crap sound. :)

In answer to your initial Q, you can probably just bond the fibreglass to the MDF.

How thick is your fibreglass? I'd think you need it to be 1/2" to 3/4"! What I'd be tempted to do is cut a frame the same shape as the MDF front, about 1/4" smaller around the outside and about 1.5" wide and then bond that in with the fibreglass wrapping all the way around it. (its hard to describe, really need to draw it)
Then you can screw the front into that frame (with lots of silicone sealant) and get a REALLY good joint.

Hmm.. this gets me thinking.. my bass bin is getting a bit tired.... Hmmmmmmm.

Re: Re: Steath SUB!

What is coremat? and where can i get it? fogive me for not knowing. Thanks.

Re: Re: Re: Steath SUB!

Coremat is basically a woven material, not sure what it is but its not glass. Probably nylon or polyester or the such. Its a bit like felt and is used to make layups alot thicker, sorta like the way they use honeycomb in racecars BUT the coremat goes around corners.

Any good boat bits supplier should be able to sell you some.
