have decided to make my own carpeted sub box from mdf and fibreglass, like in this months max power and I am going to try and mould it to the shape of the side of the boot using the mesh and fibreglass I bought.

What sort of holes do I need to drill for wires in the box?, do you get the wires with the sub, enough to reach the headunit?

I have never acually seen a sub up close and I have not bought one so I don't know, I am going to cut a 10" hole for the sub, maybe a pioneer? I think they look quite cool.

I'll let you guys no how I get on, i think it's going to be difficult, but what the hell. It's dirt cheap up to now.

Get the speaker before you cut the hole, speakers are not quite all the same size.

Also a 10" speaker is 10" overall so actually needs a smaller hole cut in the box.

Happy building!

Re: Re: stealth sub

Also, you don't wire the sub directly to the headunit, you wire it to the amp:

HU -->(RCA cable)--> Amp -->(Speaker Wire)--> Sub

cheers for the advice

do you definately need an amp? because i don't really want to buy one

Yep !

afraid so...

The head unit will put out seperate left and right channels which I presume you were going to join together to connect to the sub... Bad - They are full range outputs of treble down to sub bass. A subwoofer can't handle treble any better than a tweeter can handle bass.

The output of the HU will be around 5 to 10 watts at most and most Pioneer subs will be rated around 200W at least. Underpowering speakers is probably worse than overpowering them, with overpowering you can damage the speaker, with underpowering you can damage the HU as well.

There's a whole host of other reasons as well but basically, yes, you need an amp... try these for examples...

But you also need to make sure your HU has line level outputs (RCA) or you will need an amp with speaker level inputs.

Post more about what you are after acheiving and what HU you have already etc.

Doh ! - My Bad !

The other option I forgot about was to get an active sub, which is basically a subwoofer in a box with an amp built in... but that wouldn't really work with the design you have in mind it is an option though....
