I have a Multipla 1.9 jtd. A recent intermittent problem has developed where the car starts normally but the revs won't build when the exelerator is pushed. This is accompanied by lots of black exhaust smoke. There can be problems restarting the car following this. A trip to the local garage found no problems even with the use of a diagnotic machine and the car started and ran fine while they had it.

Any ideas to suggest to the garage are very welcome.

Sounds like a turbo or EGR issue, could be a waste gate actuator stuck open or an EGR stuck open. Of course injectors are another possibility. If your garage was using a generic non Fiat scan tool and if your car is older than 2004 they would not have been able to read the codes.
