Panda (Classic) Starting up problem

Hi everyone.

I bought a Fiat Panda Eleganza Automatic 2010 last Sunday and have been practising driving this (new to me) automatic car.
I know I have to press the brake, start the car and move the stick to A/M, release brake pedal and press accelerator to start the car.
However, all I get is a beep and the 'N' sign.
If I move the gear stick to reverse then back then the car will be in gear and I can move away.
Am I doing something wrong?? Do I need to take the car back to the garage? I'd be so pleased with some help on this.
