Technical starter motor whirrs but not engage

went to start my car today, 1990 tipo 1.4
the starter motor spins but does not engage with the flywheel. I thought this did not happen woth pre engage starters? Can any one help me with this ?

Sounds like the solenoid has failed. Get your starter checked by an auto-electrician?

the problem has now been fixed. I had hoped for a more enlightened reply, but today I took the starter motor off, and cleaned and oiled the shaft on which the pinion gear slides, It had got gunged up and was locked solid so could not slide to engage with the flywheel ring gear. I post this, in case it can help someone else.
