Now that the cold weather has become damp weather, my fanbelt has started squealing like a good un'.
The car started OK all the through the cold weather; the starter laboured a bit, but it always fired up first turn. Now that the warmer weather has arrived, the car failed to start - a couple of cranks and then the battery was flat. I've recharged the battery overnight and it now starts fine, though the fanbelt squeal is still present.
Reading some of the previous threads on here, it seems that the fanbelt squeaking could possibly be attributed to a failing battery (system senses battery charge is low, so more charging load is put on the alternator, leading to greater load on the fanbelt and so more slip). Either that, or the fanbelt and/or tensioner is on the way out.
So, what do people in the know here recommend as the correct order of play? Replace battery first, see if the fanbelt squeal stops, if it does job done, if not then replace fanbelt and tensioner?
Is there anything else I should be checking?
