Hi everyone,

I was driving the car today and noticed a slipping/squeaking noise as I was driving. I tried to replicate the action that was causing it, and it seemed to occur (almost exclusively) driving in fourth gear and when I lifted off the gas.

So, if I was cruising along at 40-45mph, throttle on (but not driving hard), as I lifted off the pedal I'd hear a squeak or a slipping noise for about half a second.

It's definitely not a wheel bearing or suspension squeak, as it only happens when the engine is engaged (so not when in neutral, or drifting along with the clutch down). It doesn't happen when accelerating through the gears, only really when I lift off in fourth (and occasionally third).

It does sounds a little like a clutch slip (I had a slipping clutch in a mini in my teens, and the noise sounds familiar). A clutch related issue would make sense as late last year the brass clutch swing arm assembly sheered and was replaced (thanks for the spare part Hobbler), and while that was fixed the car also had a new clutch and clutch cable. So, that whole area has been replaced/overhauled less than 100 miles ago, and maybe it's bedding in.

That said, my experience of slipping clutches is that they slip when you place them under load (especially pulling away) and not when you take load off by decelerating. The car is pulling away very nicely (with no slipping or squeaking) and pulls up hill under load as strong as ever. So the clutch seems to be driving healthily.

Any ideas? Could it be drive shaft related?

Pete

Just coming back to the possibility of a slipping belt, if the belt is toothed is it even possible that it’s slipping?
