Ok folks, looking to get more involved in MSSQL, specifically T-SQL. Not too bothered about administrating, can install, move DBs etc anyway and it's generally quite reliable.

Should I brush up on my knowledge of relational DBs and the way SQL works or just dive straight in to learning TSQL?

Can anyone recommend any books as well, really struggling to find anything decent on Amazon.

Thanks.

p.s Level of knowledge: Novice

I would suggest getting your head round the basics of SQL first (doesn't matter which flavour they are basically the same). Then get your teeth into T-SQL once you've got the basics under your belt like selects, inner and outer joins, sorts and order by's then crack out the big guns and get going.

Have you ever done any programming before?

Cheers Arc, going to get my head around SQL first.

I did a bit of C++ in college, and a bit of XML here and there, and some php/css/html when I was converting a website from html to php.

I'd really like to learn VB and ASP to go hand in hand with SQL though.

As of 2 years ago I had never done any programming. Took on an IT Techy job and after 6 months when it was really busy offered to help out more and got a couple of baisc crash courses of the DEV's and then taught myself T-SQL from there. And now I'm a Systems Administrator.

I used a couple of books, i'll dig them out and tell you what they were and if you need anything just give me a shout.

I've been an IT techy for 2 years, just dipping my toes in to our DBs here and there but really want to get more involved.

I made a previous thread about going for the CompTIA suite but I can do all that stuff already, and my heart was always wanting to go for developing.

Hopefully I'll get put on some form of training course but if I'm prepared from the off I'm sure I'll find it much easier.

No-one wants to learn VB. Some people are forced into learning it. Might benefit from learning some VBS though for dipping into AD etc

:yeahthat:

VBS is a valuable tool, expecially when you start getting into multisite deployments :).

Created one the other day that mapped printers & drives and added internet favourites based on what ip range was assigned to the PC (and thus determining which site you're loging onto) :slayer:

Yeah that, joined a bunch of machines to a domain today with a script which named the PC, joined the domain and deposited each machine in the appropriate OU (y)

Well got started on my SAMS Sql in 10 minutes book tonight, and my SQL for dummies as well.

Think I'm getting some actual training on it early next year so want to get a base of knowledge.

:)
