Technical Sport mode always on?

I'm picking up my first Fiat this afternoon, a 2008 Fiat Bravo 1.4Tjet sport (called a Ritmo here in Aus), and I'm wondering: Why shouldn't I just leave Sports mode switched on? What effect does it have on fuel consumption and longevity of the engine parts, if any? Anyone know a good reason to turn it off?

Another Aussie Ritmo owner welcome to the forum! I don't own a sport but surely the extra fun from the over boost will compensate a drop in economy

You wouldn't notice any drop in fuel economy, when I took my car I've driven it like that for months...

But couple of things to have in mind:
- steering wheel will be heavy all the time, which is not especially good in city driving conditions;
- as far as I know boost works for limited period of time when starting to accelerate, then turns off...so no point in having it constantly on compared to turning it on before accelerating;
- you'll get used to the torque and you'll miss the oomph feeling when you drive it normally and just trash it from time to time :devil:

I don't know if it's just the way I drive when it's in sports mode, but have noticed about a 1litre/100k difference (roughly 8.2 vs 9+). Although to be fair I'm not exactly just cruising about in either mode.

Turbo engines love the colder air because it's more dense. You'll notice improved economy and better performance in cooler weather.

On the contrary cooler ambient temps reduce fuel economy as the engine will take longer to get to full operating temperature

i knew about improved performance because of denser air but was surprised with the economy. thanks!

In wintertime I use a lot more liters than in summertime.

Ontopic:
When I drive heavy traffic, or in the city in prefer the non-sport modus. Its more relax, because the sport modus increases the sensitifity of the right pedal. It's more nervous in sport.
But I have chipped my car and it made all the settings even more extreme. So steering is become even more heavy, gasresponse more sensitive and the difference in power between sport and non-sport bigger.

Love it! Now the sportbutton really makes a big change. And with 185BHP and 295NM a real beast!

I live between Mt Mee and Mt Glorious :slayer: ... The fiat is quite fun - I have been a bit shy and haven't found the limits of handling yet, not really had the chance and don't want to hurt my new car - and I tend to ride my motorbike more often on the fun roads, anyway

I have squeaky brakes due to a lip on the disks. I'm putting up with it as I still have a lot of pad left. I'll just change pads and discs at the next service.

have a good examination of the breaks. Check the thickness of the pads and if there's any lips on your discs. If it has got a lip but still breaks fine i wouldn't worry about it for now. Though it's each to their own so if you feel you need them checked by a professional get down to a garage ASAP,

Cheers mate just had mot from fiat before buying with no advisories about brakes so should b ok just sounds terrible wen stoping the car

I made fuel consumption measurements (t-jet 150).
In Standart mode with fast (some aggressive) driving I got 11L/100km.
In Sport mode in regular driving I got 9L/100km.

So ALL fuel consumption depends on your driving style. SPORT gives only some better throttle sensitivity and little more boost (10%) in 2000-4000 rpm.
P.S. I don't like SPORT in regular city driving, because car becomes very "sharp" and aggressive.

The most I like in Sport mode is when 2L engines see my rear plate-number which moving away quickly :devil:
